Maternal-Fetal Specialist

Perinatologists, also referred to as maternal-fetal medicine physicians, are specialists in the field of high risk obstetrics.  The training includes a residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology, followed by a 2 to 3-year fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine.   Perinatologists are involved in caring for women with pre-existing medical conditions in pregnancy as well as both maternal and fetal complications of pregnancy.  We care for conditions such as maternal diabetes, hypertensive disorders, multiple gestation, preterm-labor, fetal anomalies, genetic disorders and many others.  Additionally, perinatologists are trained to perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures during pregnancy such as high level ultrasound, chorionic villous sampling, and fetal transfusion.  At New Jersey Perinatal Associates, we have nine maternal-fetal specialists that work in conjunction with the general obstetrician/gynecologist to manage patients and provide consultative services during the pregnancy.
