Non-invasive Prenatal Screening
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) in New Jersey
At New Jersey Perinatal Associates (NJPA), we aim to provide expectant mothers with valuable insights into their baby’s health through non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). This simple blood test screens for chromosomal abnormalities as well as the sex of your baby—as early as 9 weeks into your pregnancy, and with a high degree of accuracy. NIPT typically assesses for abnormalities involving chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X. and Y.
In addition, there are specialized versions of NIPT that are recommended for twins or for patients with a history of a pregnancy with a chromosome abnormality. Overall, the detection rates for NIPT are high (93-99%). However, it is not a diagnostic test and the possibility for false positive and false negative results does exist. We recommend speaking with your provider to learn more about NIPT is right for you.
