Viability & Dating Ultrasound

In the early first trimester, ultrasound can be used to confirm the presence of a living embryo and assess its early development. This is usually done between 6 and 9 weeks’. Early ultrasound can help determine if a pregnancy is progressing normally by checking for heartbeat activity and looking at the size and structure of an embryo. Ultrasound also helps establish how far along a pregnancy is, particularly if the last menstrual period date is unknown or if menses are irregular.
An accurate due date provides critical early information about the health of a pregnancy and helps both parents and providers to care for a pregnancy and the months until delivery.
