Dr. Peláez was inspired to pursue her field from a young age – her grandmother was a midwife in South America and became a nurse when she moved to the United States. She had three younger siblings as well, “so I always grew up thinking I was going to take care of pregnant women.” She went to medical school to become an obstetrician, and once she began her residency, she ended up pursuing Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The challenges associated with high-risk pregnancy are what drew her to this specific position. She had two high-risk pregnancies herself, which allows her to empathize with and relate to her patients on a higher level.
She says that the majority of her time spent in the office does not consist of giving patients bad news, because even when pregnancies are high-risk, the outcome can still be great. “We’re still able to participate in one of the best things that can possibly happen to our patients. Even though a lot of patients say ‘I’m high-risk, I have to go see a high-risk doctor’ I tend to tell them ‘you have a high-risk issue, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the outcome here is going to be less than great.”
Dr. Peláez’s hobbies outside of work are mainly music-based – she is a classically trained pianist and was in a band with her family for around 20 years. She enjoys spending time with her family, including her two children and her dogs. Dr. Peláez is also bilingual, being fluent in both Spanish and English. Patients can make an appointment with Dr. Peláez at any one of our office locations in Livingston, Paramus, Teaneck, Warren, or Westfield, New Jersey.
